Learning To Dive
How Do I Know If I Will Like Diving?
If you would like to learn to dive but you are not sure it's the sport for you Burnley & District Sub Aqua club can start
you on your way. You can try a dive in the safety of a local swimming pool. If you find the experience to your liking
there is the option of enjoying two further dives before you need to join the club.
Do I Need To Buy Lots Of Expensive Equipment?
The equipment required to complete your sheltered water training will be supplied by the club. Once you are ready
for your open water dives you may need to hire a dry suit or you could always talk nicely to any member and try to borrow one of theirs.
Many members learning to dive start to buy their own equipment over several months.
Where Will I learn To Dive?
You will initially train and develop your practical skills every other Tuesday in the pool at the Padiham Leisure Center. When you are ready to undertake open water dives the club often uses the Capernwray dive site.
Theory training is taught at the Ightenleigh Social CLub on the none pool Tuesday nights. See club calendar for more details.
How Long Will It Take Me To Learn?
Many diving schools often claim to train people to dive in only a few days. Those of us who dive regular know they only teach the
very basics in diving skills which without practice are soon forgotten at a pace determined by the timetable. With Burnley & District
Sub Aqua club you learn to dive at pace you find comfortable and where the skills you learn become second nature. This type of training
takes much long and is determined by yourself and your ability. Typically you will begin open water diving with an instructor
after only a few months, hopefully reaching 'BSAC Ocean Diver' standard (click here to visit the BSAC web site for more details) within a year.
Who Will Train Me?
The club has a number of BSAC qualified instructors who will train you initially to Ocean diver level, and then on to sports diver and beyond.
How Much Will This Cost Me?
For the cost of your first try dive and two further dives and annual membership see the page. In addition divers often incur admission fees to inland dive sites of typically £5~£10 per day.
Equipment costs vary greatly depending on the quality of the product you buy. There are many offers available on the web or
from dive shops see the links page for possible sites.
